Preparations are already underway for a decidedly altered Halloween celebration... come and visit one of the cool new bars that has opened up in downtown Hollywood recently. Cool vibe, some really good music, and laid back atmosphere will leave you thinking that you've stepped into the South Pacific, if only for a few moments.

Rumor has it that Alex Grey, one of our personal heroes, is to be in S. Florida in the first week of December. Our friends from the Kava Bar will have a booth at his event, but details right now are still in the works. More info to come as we receive it..

The phoenix rises out of the ash and rubble.

New life from destruction of old cities in the mind.

Cities that were built to defend and protect at all costs.

Walls put up to keep from feeling humanities struggles.

Out of it all, as they come crumbling down,

Miracles arise in reverence to this holy land.

Now in reception, the expanse unfolds

Ready, giving birth to the love that we are.

Lives intertwined, commingled in the highest realms.

A City of Light will be built with no walls.

Only doors to the inner most truth of our souls.

And windows into the deep love of our hearts.

Cities of gold, sweet gardens, waters cleansing

Where life grows constantly to fruition.

A joy, a purity of purpose, a grace of integrity

Beauty and passion burning an eternal flame.

Community garden sprouts in Hollywood

A community garden has sprouted in Hollywood's Highland Gardens neighborhood.

Located at 24th Avenue and Adams Street, the garden is built on land donated by the city temporarily.

When local residents asked city officials to use the land, they were pleasantly surprised.

"The land was just sitting here not being used, so we asked [ Vice Mayor Beam Furr] if it was possible if we could have this community garden here," said Shirley Stealey. "The city has graciously [helped]. They came in here and they cleared the land for us, they bought water for us, they built boxes for us. It's amazing what they have done, and they are helping us organize it."

For the city, it was a no-brainer.

"At some point, this will be nice new housing for the area, but in the meantime, why not?" Furr said. "Especially in these economic times, people can have their own little victory garden."

Maria Jackson, who helped advocate for the garden, said it is a great way to save money.

"I saw a television program where they said that they were trying to supplement their grocery budget because of the hard times. I thought that was a good idea, and right away this land came to mind because it's been vacant for a while," Jackson said.

Several sponsors contributed resources to the garden, including the city's public works and utilities departments.

Residents can plant a variety of fruits and vegetables and are given the option of using ready-made plant boxes filled with soil or planting directly in the ground.

"We know it's not planting season right now, but we've got a few things that we hope will grow," Stealey said.

The city is encouraging residents to use environmentally friendly techniques.

Alice D'Emilio, the city's nursery supervisor, reached out to the group to offer some advice.

"We had a round-table discussion ... before we started the gardening about composting and how important it is to take the waste out of the kitchen and use it," D'Emilio said. "You can use vegetables and egg shells and coffee grounds and things that you would normally put in the landfills and recycle it."

Jeannette Smith, interim director of the city's housing and community redevelopment department, said the garden is a great way for neighbors to meet each other and build camaraderie.

"It's definitely an opportunity for residents to get together, to come out and share ideas," she said.

Only art will save us, part 2

Looking ahead for the rest of the year I'm trying to get a clearer vision of what is going to happen, what I want to make happen.

I would like to collaborate with like minded artists, I want to get some more exposure at art shows, craft fairs, and other venues and events, I would like to meet more business owners who want to feature original artwork on their walls. I would really like to find a way to have my art do more than just sit there and be pretty. I want my creations to bring beauty to a place surely, but I also want to collaborate with charities and organizations that help people through art..

So those are my wishes going forward for the year.

I truly believe that art and creativity is what makes humans evolve, and that using this gift we can help ourselves and others.

Witnesses to Hunger is about participation and action.

Through a technique called “Photovoices,” Witnesses to Hunger provided digital cameras to more than 40 women who have young children in Philadelphia and recorded their stories about these photos. Their focus? The experience of hunger and poverty, their ideas for change.

All too often, policies and programs are created without the participation of the people who are most affected. Who better to speak on poverty and maternal and child health than mothers of young children? They are the true experts.

These mothers are opening themselves to the world. The result is intimate, moving, disturbing. Without pretense or self-censorship, these moms focused their lenses on their children, their neighborhood, their grind at work or on Welfare. Every frame illustrates how policy makers under-estimate or simply don’t fully understand what it’s like to be poor – and what it’s like to know that your children are.

These women are, for all practical measure, teachers with invaluable lessons to impart. Each of us is invited to look and listen for their guidance.

I've taken a bit of a hiatus from creating and from promoting myself, but I know that I can't stay under my rock forever. I just took some time out to live and gain experiences from which I could "draw on" when I'm creating. I think that is important as an artist.. just like someone who's looking at something from too close of a perspective you won't be able to see the bigger picture. Living time is part of gaining perspective on the meaning of your life and the meaning of what you create, and it's necessary for any artist to take this kind of time out on occasion.

So during my hiatus I've done a lot of walking around town, enjoying sunsets and sunrises and the many characters I run into around town, allowing the colors and sounds of Hollywood and South Florida flood my senses.

Rebekka Pierre - Set Designer

Originally from Munich, Germany, Rebekka has been a lifelong self-taught visual artist working in several mediums from pencil to oil paints to collage. Rebekka's art has always had a unique, free-flowing style which she has carried through the years of her creative evolution. Currently Rebekka's work can be described as abstract, psychedelic, organic, spiritual, and with a touch of grafitti. She counts Jean-Paul Basquiat, Keith Haring, Alex Grey, and Salvador Dali as the major influences of her work. She has been featured in the Miami Art Zine, Sun-Sentinel, and The New York Optimist online magazine. Rebekka's art has been exhibited in several art fairs, the Hollywood Art Walk, various local businesses, and currently she is [HONORED TO BE ~RP] the set designer for the original Mario Betto play "Combing Through Life's Tangles".

Monika Marie - Set Designer

Born and raised in the heart of the art industry in Miami, Florida, Monika has been surrounded by various art forms since a baby. Born to a Cuban self-taught artist/interior designer, whom never had the opportunity to make his dreams realization & with an older brother as a freelance artist, Monika is taking her talents to a new horizon. As a recent graduate in Residential Design at the Art Institute of Ft.Lauderdale, she is currently finishing her Bachelor's in Interior Design at the Miami Int'l University of Art & Design with plans to continue her education at Pratt Institute in New York City. Her talents range from architectural working drawings to renderings in mixed media such as acrylic, pastels, & gauche. Her influences have ranged from her father to Isamu Noguchi to Ingo Maurer. She is currently working as a set designer for Mario Betto's original play "Combing Through Life's Tangles".

I'm continuing on my creative journey.. now my CV includes not only creating original artworks for my own pleasure and yours, showing art at local galleries and exhibitions for emerging artists, art walks and so on. Now I am creating art for the viewing public in terms of being directly involved in creating the atmosphere and mood of a fantastic play.. in other words I am responsible for the play's set design and I want it to be great (I have lots of ideas and am working them out in rough drafts as I write).

This is an expansion of my artistic adventures that I never would have expected to encounter a year ago, yet here this opportunity has come and I am happy to take on that challenge. This is a venture that has a big heart, so it made it even more attractive to me. I hope that everyone gets to experience their own challenges and goals and succeed at them. That is my new year wish to you all. Peace, and keep pushing yourself towards excellence.

Combing Through Life's Tangles

Mario Betto is the multi-talented auteur and director of a play that has been getting great reviews in South Florida press for the last year. That play is "Combing Through Life's Tangles" and I had the pleasure of meeting him through my best friend Amy Hill. That was not the first stroke of good luck.. we had common interests so we have agreed to work together on his Hollywood production of the play! My role will be as a set designer and painter. I will create original set backdrops with inspiration taken from Mario's play. That's all I can tell right now. More details as this story develops. ;)

Combing Through Life's Tangles will be shown at the Hollywood Playhouse on Washington Street on March 6th-8th, 2009. I'm excited and honored to be working on this project with Mario. Not only is he a writer, director, and musician, he also has a big heart. He is the founder of Hairstylists for Humanity, a 501(c)3 charity whose stated mission "is to provide NO-COST beauty and grooming services to diverse individuals in need, promote summer food drives and educate the community through the arts". And best of all "100% OF PROCEEDS FROM "COMBING THROUGH LIFE'S TANGLES" GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALS TO LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST."

Supporting this play is supporting your community so that we are able to give back to those in need who live all around us every day. This is not just art for the sake of entertainment, it is a labor of love which has the power to reach out to so many people in so many different ways.

Owner and trainer Ali Witherspoon (aka "that Boot Camp Guy" you see often at Hollywood Beach training his troops) has extended an invitation to local artists to display their artwork at his new studio location. There is plenty of wallspace for even very large pieces. My biggest paintings leave plenty of room to share with other artists. I am one of the first artists to show my work there, and I have the current selection of original paintings available for sale at reduced prices for the holiday season. If you're in the area go ahead and take a trip to this fitness studio / art gallery to get your body and your art in shape. Maffu Arts Gallery closing

It's a sad day in the Hollywood art scene.. Maffu is no more. At the end of this week the gallery with some of the most unique art in the city is closing its doors. I bid the gallery a sad farewell and thank owner Jose Julio for being such a gracious host to my artwork for the last three months. I wish him well in his future endeavours.. a man like him is always going to be doing something creative, and I hope I am able to be a part of or witness to his future incarnations.
